About the event
1. Agriculture and GHG Emissions
Contribution to GHG: Agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Tanzania, accounting for roughly 90% of methane (CH₄) and 75% of nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions. These gases come primarily from livestock digestion (enteric fermentation) and fertilizer use in crop production.
Livestock Sector: Tanzania's large cattle population contributes significantly to methane emissions. The country has one of the largest livestock herds in Africa, with over 25 million cattle, adding to GHG emissions through enteric fermentation.
Deforestation: Agriculture is a driver of deforestation in Tanzania, which exacerbates carbon emissions. Forest clearing for crop cultivation and livestock grazing leads to the loss of carbon sinks and increases CO₂ levels in the atmosphere.
2. Sustainable Agricultural Practices
Conservation Agriculture: This includes practices such as minimal soil disturbance (no-till farming), crop rotation, and permanent soil cover. These methods have shown success in improving soil health and reducing GHG emissions…
